This Classify Human Environment Interactions lesson explores how geography affects people and how people, in turn, affect geography. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 5-E format is easy for teachers to implement. Accompanying fill-in notes are provided.

First, introduce key vocabulary words related to the main concepts. Then, lead a “Move It” warm-up activity to explore the differences between adaptations and modifications.

The “I Spy…” and “Stickman’s Travels” activities challenge students to find and classify examples of human-environment interactions in real-world photographs. Finally, assess student learning through the “GSI: Geography Scene Investigation” activity, where students examine a region's geographic features and analyze how humans might adapt to or modify the environment to best suit their needs.

Both print and interactive digital versions of the materials are included, making this lesson suitable for traditional classroom settings or digital 1:1 environments. Everything you need is provided!
