Día de Los Muertos Lesson - Day of the Dead in Pixar’s “Coco” - Print & Digital
This lesson explores the rich traditions of Mexico's Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, and connects the holiday to Pixar’s movie, *Coco*. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 5-E format is easy for you to use! Everything you need is included!
Start with a “Memory Game: Mexico” warm-up, then introduce Dia de Los Muertos with a “Fact or Fiction?” activity. Discuss various Day of the Dead customs and explain new vocabulary. Fill-in notes accompany the lesson. Next, challenge your students to examine elements of a traditional Day of the Dead celebration with a fun “Pixar’s Coco” investigation. A printable “walk-around” poster version is also included for in-class instruction. Finally, assess student learning with a creative activity in which students write a recipe explaining how to celebrate Día de Los Muertos. While students do not need to have seen the movie to participate, many have, and they often enjoy exploring these connections!
