Explore African Cultures in Marvel’s Black Panther 6E Lesson - Print & Digital
This lesson explores “Wakanda” to understand Africa’s cultural diversity and the authentic African traits that inspired Marvel's "Black Panther" movie. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 5-E format is easy for you to use! Everything you need is included!
Start with a fun “Sorting Hat: Africans” warm-up to address common misconceptions about Africa. Next, explore how the Marvel movie, “Black Panther”, blended traits from various African groups to create the imaginary nation of “Wakanda.” Fill-in notes accompany the lesson. An investigation activity challenges your class to identify connections between the film and the real world. A printable “walk-around” poster version is also included for in-class instruction. Finally, assess learning through a fun activity where students write a recipe explaining how to create “Wakanda.” Students do not need to have seen the movie, but in my experience, most have and love making these connections. This is always a student-favorite lesson and works great as a Black History Month activity!
