This lesson explores the challenges of forming a government and the reasons why a government is necessary. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 5-E format is easy for you to follow!

Start with a “Password” warm-up that introduces the concept of “government,” then present the key ideas about the role of government in society. Accompanying fill-in notes are provided for the lesson.

Next, the “Island Challenge” allows students to experience the difficulties of establishing a government. As a group of castaways on a deserted island, they must collaborate to organize their new society in order to survive.

Finally, check for understanding and evaluate learning with an “Exit Ticket” activity. Both printable and interactive digital versions of the materials are included. This lesson is designed for traditional in-class learning as well as for digital 1:1 classrooms. Everything you need is provided!
