Middle East, Southwest Asia & North Africa Intro & Maps Lesson - Google Digital Resources
This lesson on Southwest Asia and North Africa explores misconceptions about the Middle East using regional maps. It seeks to debunk common falsehoods about the culture and geography of the Middle East, which also encompasses North Africa and Southwest Asia. The activities are designed to engage students, and the guided 5-E format makes it easy for teachers to implement.
The lesson begins with a warm-up activity called “#BeenThereDoneThat” to assess students' prior knowledge of the region. Next, students challenge stereotypes about the Middle East through a “Fact or Fiction?” activity, followed by a critical thinking activity to clarify misconceptions. Accompanying fill-in notes are provided for the lesson.
Afterward, students will investigate and analyze “8 Maps that Explain the Middle East.” A printable “walk-around” poster version for in-class instruction is also included. Finally, learning is assessed with a summative activity titled “MythBusters.” The materials are available in both printable and interactive digital formats, making them suitable for traditional classroom settings or digital 1:1 classrooms. Everything you need for a comprehensive lesson is included!
