This geography lesson explores the influence of OPEC and the impact of globalization on the world's oil supply. It examines how reserves in Southwest Asia and North Africa, along with fracking in the United States, affect the price of oil globally. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 6-E format is easy for teachers to implement.

Start with a “Match It” map warm-up to review the Middle East, then introduce key vocabulary and background information. Fill-in notes are provided to accompany the lesson. A “What If...?” activity explains how the price of oil is controlled by supply and demand. Next, students will investigate the positive and negative effects of oil fracking and analyze political cartoons about OPEC.

Finally, assess learning with an “Exit Ticket” quiz. Both print and interactive digital versions of the materials are included, making it suitable for traditional in-class learning or digital 1:1 classrooms. Everything you need is provided!
