This fun lesson explores American holiday traditions by imagining a Thanksgiving on Mars. The activities are engaging for students, and the guided 5-E format is easy for you to use! Everything you need is included!

Begin with a “Say Something…” warm-up, then review the history of Thanksgiving in the United States. Discuss the differences between primary and secondary sources of information. Next, students imagine it is the year 2038 and they are living in the first American colony on Mars. They will be challenged to identify primary and secondary sources that Martian children could use to learn about Thanksgiving traditions on Earth. Finally, students invent examples of each type of source that Earthlings might reference to understand how colonists on Mars celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Creativity is encouraged! A fill-in rubric is included for easy grading. This lesson explores Thanksgiving customs and connects the holiday with your Science and Social Studies curriculum standards.
